The benefits of adequate nutrition for the whole family

By April 12, 2017 No Comments

In recent years, we have seen a growing awareness of the importance of good nutrition. Eating a diet based on locally sourced, organic and fresh produce supports the health of the whole family, from children to our elders.

To maintain good health it is recommended that adults eat a minimum of five to six serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit every day. However, very few children or adults meet these recommendations, compromising nutritional intake and running the risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Deficiencies of some key micronutrients, such as Vitamin D and iodine, are emerging as significant public health problems. Subclinical deficiencies of zinc may affect growth and development in children, as well as immune function and connective tissue integrity in adults and the elderly.

The following groups may benefit from nutritional supplementation.

  • Children: Adequate consumption of vitamins and minerals is essential for brain function, growth and development.
  • Vegetarians/vegans.
  • The elderly.
  • Stressed individuals: Nutritional status can either provide us protection or make us susceptible to the adverse effects of unmanaged stress. B vitamins, folate, zinc, magnesium and calcium are of particular importance.
  • Tiredness and fatigue: Inadequate supply of nutrients affects the ability of the body’s energy machine, the mitochondria, to convert food into energy.
  • Healthy ageing.
  • Suboptimal immune function.
  • Poor dietary and/or lifestyle choices.

There are a host of different supplements available out there, which can be daunting, so come and speak to one of our qualified practitioner to find out what is best for you.
