Tell us how it all began with creating atamira.
Having my own design store was one of two childhood dreams (the other being a Log Cabin aka Little House on the Prairie) as I’ve always loved beautiful ideas and design. It was a now or never moment 5 years ago that gave fruition to Atamira. As well as being a beautiful word ‘atamira’ means stage/ platform in maori and I’m getting closer to adding more of my own collections in atamira. Its been great because I love hunting, discovering new ideas and styling things together old and new, Atamira gives me the space to share this while continuing to evolve.
How would you describe your business?
Eclectic and fresh, feels good… continually something for me to do, lots of ideas… enjoyed by many, something for everyone.
What inspires you in terms of style?
Music, traveling to new places and experiences, natural beauty, art, hunting around second hand stores, mixing it up – eclectic, clever and simple ideas with an edge/ twist, beautiful fabrics and colours … lots! Fashion is so diverse these days and I would nearly say being fashionable is having your own style, its being confident in who you are and what you like — im inspired by anyone rockin their own style and ideas without overdoing it.
If you could give one piece of style advice, what would it be?
Quality over quantity…go for timeless pieces in your wardrobe. Often it’s the little details that make the difference. Wear what you feel comfortable in and don’t be afraid to take some risks … just not all at once. For me inspired style is effortless and natural. Oops that’s more than one.
What things do you most love about the place you live?
The natural energy and soul of Raglan, it’s a special place with real depth. A little raw and creative, amazing natural landscape and people… so many people being true to their passions and dreams or at least trying to and enjoying life. Its an interesting and gratifying place to live…. I do love catching sunsets too. (Great place for kids to grow up in)
What is the one essential item in your wardrobe you couldn’t live without?
My pounamu heart pendant that as a child I remember digging up in our garden with my nana, I very rarely take it off.
