On our Plate
The Wharf Kitchen and Bar
Just over a year old now, The Wharf Kitchen and Bar has quickly established itself as a staple in the Raglan eatery scene.
Housed in the old Marlin Bar location at the end of Wallis St, owners Helen and Barry have transformed the once fading haunt into a roomy delight, featuring white-washed walls and gorgeous furniture.
The waterfront location has inspired a diverse menu, featuring fresh local seafood and prime New Zealand meat. Ideal for family dining.
The Wharf aims to take good food and make it great, as its current summer offerings will attest.
The breakfast and lunch menu is sure to keep the crew happy, featuring ugly bagels topped with salmon and capers, classic bacon and egg plates, along with chowder, burgers, and chicken parmigianino.
The dinner menu brings both big and small plates to the table, so narrowing it down to just one might prove difficult. Perhaps we could suggest starting with the scallops, which are accompanied by a flavourful medley of signature sauces and greens: it’s the perfect starter for a summer evening meal.
If you’re out with friends, sharing is the way to go. The popular Seafood Plank features sashimi, ceviche, prawns and more, complemented by a fish pate and sesame mayo. And if you’re in the mood for more, The Big Wharf Plank with meats and cheeses has got you covered.
But if you’re extra hungry and not wanting to share, any one of the big plates will keep you happy. From an aged eye fillet, complete with a horseradish cream and jus, to cajun fish tacos, The Wharf really has something for everyone’s taste – we even have a new children’s menu.
All of this is presented alongside Helen’s handpicked drinks menu; there’s a wine list that explores many regions, with wines to enhance every flavour on the menu.
With balcony seating, the restaurant gives you paradise within paradise.
Whether you’re heading down for breakfast, lunch or dinner, be sure to have an open schedule. With the sharp and friendly service, the sea view and the flavours, The Wharf will keep you glued to your seat.
The Wharf Kitchen and Bar is open everyday from 9.30 till late. Courtesy transport is available by phoning 825 0010.
HeartBeads / NZ Handmade Glass Art
From Venice to Raglan, glass artist Peter Hohenberger GIVES us a glimpse into his beading life
Peter Hohenberger – The Glass Artist:
What fascinated me most in high school was art, particularly Art Noveau with all those intricate flowing, flowery, complicated designs.
When I migrated to New Zealand in 1996, after a professional career in software and high-tech IT in Europe, I set up “La Fleur bleue”, a glass studio dedicated to the art of L.C Tiffany. For many years I created beautiful lamps, mirrors and windows, reflecting the work of Mr Tiffany and introducing my own designs.
Ten years ago I watched a glass artist in Venice working at the torch, melting glass, creating three-dimensional objects, and I was hooked. Since then, I started HeartBeads, making handmade glass objects and jewellery completed with sterling silver. Everything is created in Raglan, New Zealand.
HeartBeads – The Studio:
What I do
I concentrate on glass objects, beads and jewellery, created from my own work. My inspirations come from simply looking out of the window at Moonlight Bay – the colours of Aotearoa, the light and the ever- changing wonders of nature.
How I do it
My raw glass comes from Murano, an island near Venice, Italy. Working on a glass artist’s torch (running on LPG and oxygen) I melt this glass into different shapes and structures, giving colours with different transparent and opaque glass. Techniques like raking, swirling, dots help me to shape every single glass object into something totally unique. There will never be two the same.
Open studio – what you will see
You can watch me working “at the flame” – using the torch, melting glass, making beads. You can even try your luck and make your own bead! It might be easier than you think … (Conditions apply.) For more information go to:
