Wildcoast Ruapuke
Experience the rugged West Coast
Y ay! It’s summer again!
After lots of rain over winter and spring we now have fat, happy horses ready for their busy time of trekking.
In addition to our private eco cabins we now have a new, fresh spring water-filled hot tub secluded in the bush, ready for a relaxing soak. (Please note, the hot tub is booked separately.)
If you want to explore the environment and scenery, horseback is the way to go.
With two daily trips you can choose our three-hour extreme adventure for a ride along ridges, crossing through streams and over stunning farmland.
Travel through mature native bush and regenerating manuka and kanuka to end up on the volcanic glistening sand of Ruapuke Beach.
Enjoy the waves (yes, we do go in) then continue down the beach for a good gallop, a controlled canter or a quiet walk for those who like to take it easy.
Our two-hour option experiences similar views and scenery, just a little shorter and less extreme, perfect for families or groups with no riding experience.
So take a beautiful scenic drive around the spectacular Whaanga coast … keep driving and you will find us at Ruapuke Beach. An alternative, less gravelly route can be taken via Te Mata Rd.
We are proud to have been a finalist in the Bookabach Golden Piwa Awards for eco bach of 2016, for our two cabins, Windyflax and Watersong, perched on a bushclad valley with wonderful ocean views, and of course the majestic Karioi te Maunga. Listen to the biggest waterflow off this side of Mt Karioi, as the Wairake Stream flows below the cabins in the valley.
Run off alternative power, you can hide away with no wifi and little phone coverage. The cabins are simple and stylish and have everything you need for a great few nights away.
While off the grid you can relax, unwind, look at the stars, listen to birds or admire nature in our chemical-free hot tub. Each hot tub booking is filled fresh for your stay with beautiful spring water.
Happiness and memories are what we aim for. Our family has been up and running with Wildcoast for two decades now, with lots of love for our horses and the people we meet.
Our horses are beautiful and well mannered, just like our guides! We will look after you well!

HeartBeads / NZ Handmade Glass Art
From Venice to Raglan, glass artist Peter Hohenberger GIVES us a glimpse into his beading life
Peter Hohenberger – The Glass Artist:
What fascinated me most in high school was art, particularly Art Noveau with all those intricate flowing, flowery, complicated designs.
When I migrated to New Zealand in 1996, after a professional career in software and high-tech IT in Europe, I set up “La Fleur bleue”, a glass studio dedicated to the art of L.C Tiffany. For many years I created beautiful lamps, mirrors and windows, reflecting the work of Mr Tiffany and introducing my own designs.
Ten years ago I watched a glass artist in Venice working at the torch, melting glass, creating three-dimensional objects, and I was hooked. Since then, I started HeartBeads, making handmade glass objects and jewellery completed with sterling silver. Everything is created in Raglan, New Zealand.
HeartBeads – The Studio:
What I do
I concentrate on glass objects, beads and jewellery, created from my own work. My inspirations come from simply looking out of the window at Moonlight Bay – the colours of Aotearoa, the light and the ever- changing wonders of nature.
How I do it
My raw glass comes from Murano, an island near Venice, Italy. Working on a glass artist’s torch (running on LPG and oxygen) I melt this glass into different shapes and structures, giving colours with different transparent and opaque glass. Techniques like raking, swirling, dots help me to shape every single glass object into something totally unique. There will never be two the same.
Open studio – what you will see
You can watch me working “at the flame” – using the torch, melting glass, making beads. You can even try your luck and make your own bead! It might be easier than you think … (Conditions apply.) For more information go to:
